Two Ton Death Machine

When my daughter’s friend learned how to drive, I got a ride to a store from her.  I asked her how she became such a great driver.  She told me that she thought of her car as a 2 ton death machine.  I thought that was a great way for a young new driver to look at driving.  This thinking made her more alert about how she drove and everything around her.  I wish people would look at driving like that even when they are older these days.

It is more dangerous to drive these days.  People are more selfish and are not aware of their surroundings or they just don’t care.  They may think others need to watch out for them.  They don’t think it’s their responsibility to think of others behind the wheel.  It’s sad that the caring and respect is not seen on the road in drivers.  Flying down busy roads, cutting in front of others just to get ahead of one car when they could easily fit behind them, or going down the empty turn lane to pull back into the lane at the last second are samples that I see daily.

I, also, find it crazy how people only half pay attention to the road while driving.  I have seen people watch videos on their phone, hold their phone to their ear talking, women putting on their makeup, and even reading a book on their tablet or actual book.  It’s really nerve wrecking watching some fidget with their phone and not pay attention to what is ahead of them.

For those who are always in a rush to get to work earlier, give yourself more time to drive to work.  And those who randomly run late, take the late points.  Is it worth your life to get to work on time?  For those traveling to a new area, set your maps before you start your car.  To avoid constantly looking at the map, turn on the voice to tell you where to go.  Everyone should remember that they are not alone on the road and everyone has a place to go.
