Lasting Friendships

Updated: Jun 9

Have you ever had someone in your life that you lost contact with for a long period of time, but when you speak to each other again it was like you spoke just yesterday?  Those kinds of relationships are the best.  No matter how long between conversations you know they will always be there for you.  It’s comforting knowing there are friends like that.

There are quite a few friends like that in my life.  Two of them are my cousins.  Our relationships are more like sisters that get along.  The others are friends I left when I moved from one state to another.  When I visit them it’s like I never left.  It’s not like I can talk about anything with them that makes the friendship so special.  It’s more like a connection that is the unspoken agreement that we have each other’s backs if we agree or not.

A true friend is one that accepts the differences.  A person’s thought process, their beliefs, and their like and dislikes are created during the experience through life.  A person’s heart is developed by those who surround them.  The friends that I can return to all have different life ideas than I, but we have each other in our hearts.  That to me is much more important than any political view, religious preference, or ethnicity.

Learning from your friends’ differences makes yourself a better and more understanding person.  Not so you can do or believe in the same thing, but to understand others with the knowledge.  If everyone was the same, it would be boring and nothing to intrigue us to get to meet new people.  The differences keep the friendships interesting.  We never know what we will learn next.  With the fact that each of us is always changing, meeting up with old friend where it feels like you just talked yesterday confirms how good that friendship was from the beginning.
